Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery Mrs. Bunning was born Aug. 15, 1909, in Iliff to Charles and Edna (Wood) Monroe. She attended a small country school until the second grade, and then enrolled in Iliff Elementary School She graduated in 1927 with four other members of her class. She attended the University of Colorado for two years and then began her teaching career. During the summers, she attended Western State College and the University of Northern Colorado, where she earned her bachelor of arts degree as well as a life certificate in education. Her first teaching assignment was in a rural school near Iliff, known as the Dillon School, which had an enrollment of 25 students, ranging from first through sixth grades. The following year a vacancy opened up as a second grade teacher in Iliff-District 54. She was accepted and taught second grade for 44 years. She touched the lives of more than 1,200 students and was privileged to have students from three generations of some families. She later served as a substitute teacher in the elementary schools and officially retired in 1993. She was a member of the local, state and national education organizations throughout her teaching career. During the Christmas holi day in 1944, she married Clarence Bunning in Roswell, N.M., where he was stationed with the military When his service was completed, they made their home on a farm northeast of Iliff. He retired from fa due to ill health and the couple moved to Iliff. Mr. Bunning died in 1971. Mrs. Bunning was an active member of the Iliff community; helping promote activities for the betterment of the community. She served as a member of the policy committee that introduced the Head Start program in Iliff, which has become a valuable program for children. Mrs. Bunning enjoyed giving book reviews and was often called upon to give programs at various organizations. She was a member of the American University of Women's Association, the Business and Prof.Women's Association, Sterling Does #213, the Retired Teachers Association, the Readers Club, Alpha Delta Kappa sorority the Delta Club, Hearth and Home Club, and Senior Citizens in Iliff She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes and served on other committees. She is survived by sister Wilma ‘Billie" Davis, of Sterling; brother Tom Monroe and wife Darlene, of Greeley; nieces Betty Jo Carwin, Barbara Jean Mateus, Marilyn Monroe, Miriam Monroe and Marlene Stanley; nephews Charles Davis and Eugene Monroe; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence Bunning; sisters Eula Monroe and Gladys Bunning and brothers Charles "Tex" Monroe and Eldon Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church children's department or the charity of the donor's choice, care of Chaney Reager Funeral Home, Po Box 1046, Sterling, CO 80751.
