She attended her last two years of high school in Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa. Vera married Ralph Barrett in Shenandoah on 19 Oct 1935. In 1937 Vera was stricken with infantile paralysis. She was rushed to Iowa City and then to Des Moines where she was placed in an iron lung. Vera was 17 years old. Later she returned to the home of her mother, who cared for her for three months. She then returned to her home in Shenandoah, where she remained, with the exception of making trips to Iowa City. Vera was eventually moved to Hand Hospital in Shenandoah where she died at the age of 18 years. Vera made plans for her own funeral and asked that she be buried by her father who preceded her in death in 1932. A sister, Viola, died in 1921. Vera's husband, Ralph Barrett, died in 1982 at the Veteran's Hospital in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 67 years.
