Description	:	Vera Mae Cavender, daughter of L.W. and Anna Belle Cavender, was born May 1, 1906, at the home five miles south of New Market, one half mile from the family's present home. All of her life was spent in Taylor County, with the exception of three years which she spent in Havelock, Neb at the home of her brothers, following the death of her mother. She graduated from the Havelock High School. On January 1, 1925, she was united in marriage to Thomas L. Harris. On December 13, 1939, a daughter, Janice Kay, came to brighten their home. Vera was baptized into Christ on Nov 15, 1924 and was a faithful worker with the New Market Church of Christ until her health failed her; a past matron of the order of the Easter Star; and of the North Star Circle club. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; daughter, Janice (now Mrs Phil Hardee); granddaughter, Jacquelin K. Hardee; three brothers; Clyde Cavender of Hollywood, Calif, Homer Cavender of Jackson, Mich, and Claude Cavender of New Market, Ia; three nephews: Myron and Marvin Cavender of Hollywood, Calif and Jim Cavender of Jackson, Mich; her mother-in-law, Mrs Sarah Harris; her son-in-law, Phil Hardee; and other relatives and a host of friends. Vera was preceded in death by her mother in 1921 and her father in 1927. She passed away at her home Wednesday morning, Aug 12, 1964, at the age of 58 years, 3 months and 11 days. Funeral services were held in the house of worship of the New Market Church of Christ with Clarence M. Potter, minister, in charge. Burial was in Old Memory cemetery at New Market. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa -- also in BEDFORD TIMES-PRESS, Bedford, Iowa, Aug 1964 Mason twp - After an illness which kept her bedfast for three months, Mrs Thomas (Vera May) Harris, 58, died at her home south of New Market at 11 am Wednesday. Her funeral services are to be Saturday at 2:30 pm from the New Market Church of Christ in charge of preacher Clarence Potter. Music will be by Mrs Verlin Larson and Mrs Opal Brown. The body rests at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Mrs Harris has been active until her illness, having much interest in the Church of Christ and was past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Her illness caused her to give up her activities and undergo surgery in Omaha. Her husband, to whom she was married Jan 1, 1925, and mother-in-law, Mrs Sara Harris, are survivors in the home, and her daughter is Mrs Phil (Janice) Hardee. Her three brothers are Clyde Cavender of Hollywood, Colo, Homer Cavender of Jackson, Mich, and Claude Cavender of New Market.
