Description	:	Veral Dean Smith, age 85, of Council Bluffs, died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Mr. Smith was born May 18, 1922, in Portsmouth, Iowa, to parents, Ernest and Jessie Slaven Smith. On May 2, 1942, Veral was joined in marriage to Dorothy Jean Galiher of Portsmouth. Veral enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific during WW II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Veral served the Persia area as a rural mail carrier for 33 years. Mr. Smith was born May 18, 1922, in Portsmouth, Iowa, to parents, Ernest and Jessie Slaven Smith. On May 2, 1942, Veral was joined in marriage to Dorothy Jean Galiher of Portsmouth. Veral enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific during WW II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Veral served the Persia area as a rural mail carrier for 33 years. Mr. Smith was a volunteer fireman in Persia for 35 years, past school board member for Tri Center Community Schools, served on the Persia City Council and was member of the Persia United Methodist Church, American Legion Swanger Post 314 of Persia and 40 and 8. Veral is preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister. Survivors include wife, Dorothy; children, Bob (Jan) Smith, Marilyn (Rich) Knauss, all of Council Bluffs, Jack (Mary) Smith of Minden, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; sister Darlene (Smith) Deupree of Lyons, Nebraska. Prayer Service for Veral will be on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Celebration of Life Services will be on Thursday at 10:30am at Persia Methodist Church, with Rev. Orris Drake officiating.
