Montanick, 87, of 8160 Stevenson Ave., Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Ottumwa, died at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 31, 2007 at St. Clare Rehabilitation Center in Sacramento, Calif., after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 6, 1920 in Ottumwa to John and Hannah Ware Montanick. His devoted wife of 58 years of marriage, Rogene, preceded him in death June 13, 2006. He was born Jan. 6, 1920 in Ottumwa to John and Hannah Ware Montanick. His devoted wife of 58 years of marriage, Rogene, preceded him in death June 13, 2006. Vern graduated from Ottumwa High School, the Iowa Success School in account, and radio school in Des Moines. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Vern was awarded the Bronze Star on Oct. 21, 1945 by Gen J.L. Bradley. He was also awarded a Purple Heart. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Vern retired from the Sacramento Army Depot in July of 1963 and then worked at the Army Depot for another 20 years in the civil service, retiring in January of 1985. Surviving are two daughters, Sheryl A. (Richard) Goering of Elk Grove, Calif., and Shirley A. (Lee) Hutson of Sandy, Utah; his posterity is with three granddaughters and a grandson; four great-granddaughters; a great-great-granddaughter, Hanna Kay. Also surviving is a nephew, Clenny Sullivan of Ceres, Calif.; and a niece, Janice Wilson of Reno, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Arlene McCleary; and a granddaughter, Merriah Montanick Hutson. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Family visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
