Description	:	Vern Emil Wedeking, age 90, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Arnold and Janie (Poppe) Wedeking on April 3, 1924, on a farm three and a half miles west of Plainfield. He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 25, 1924, at the First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville and was confirmed on April 10, 1938, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Read More	Vern Emil Wedeking, age 90, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Arnold and Janie (Poppe) Wedeking on April 3, 1924, on a farm three and a half miles west of Plainfield. He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 25, 1924, at the First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville and was confirmed on April 10, 1938, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Vern received his education in both rural country school near his home and the Clarksville Community School. Vern was inducted into the United States Army on May 11, 1943, during WWII. He served in the 1299th Engineer Combat Battalion in the Philippines and Japan and was honorably discharged February 15, 1946. He returned from the war and went to work for the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo until 1947. Vern was united in marriage with Lavon Louise Stoxen on March 19, 1947, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ. They farmed on the home place where Lavon was born north of Clarksville. In February of 1985, Vern and Lavon retired from farming and one year later they moved into Clarksville where they purchased a home. On September 12, 2011, they sold their home and moved in with Steve and Gloria for a year. On August 25, 2012, Vern moved to the Clarksville Skilled and Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Vern was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, where he had served on the church board, and he also was a life member of the Clarksville AMVETS Post #30. He always enjoyed going out for dinner, taking Lavon shopping, going for car rides and traveling together on many vacations. Vern’s greatest joy was time spent with his family. Vern passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, at Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Lavon on October 4, 2011; his parents; one brother, Erwin Wedeking; and one sister, Bernice Jacobs. Vern is survived by two sons, Steve (Gloria) Wedeking of Clarksville, and Michael (Dana) Wedeking of Waverly; five grandchildren, Jason (Lisa) Wedeking, Amy Jo (Brian) Northland, Matthew (Samantha) Wedeking, Teri (Whitley) Burrier and David (Brittany) Wedeking; nine great-grandchildren, Sam, Jasmine, Kaden, Cole, Ethan, Kole, Keylee, Kallie and Broderick; one great-granddaughter to be; and one brother, Leo (Dorothy) Wedeking of Clarksville. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Clarksville AMVETS Post #30, Cedar Valley Hospice, Immanuel United Church of Christ or Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
