Description	:	Vern Ferree was born 12 Aug 1900 in Las Animas, Colorado to Philip Walker and Theodosia (Bowman) Ferree. He was the seventh of eight siblings. Vern attended rural Matheson, Colorado schools. At 17 years old, he went to Breen, Colorado to help his brother, Clark Ferree, by farming. After the death of Clark in December 1918, he went back to Matheson, Colorado where he continued his education at Ariba School. He achieved an 8th grade education. Read More	Vern Ferree was born 12 Aug 1900 in Las Animas, Colorado to Philip Walker and Theodosia (Bowman) Ferree. He was the seventh of eight siblings. Vern attended rural Matheson, Colorado schools. At 17 years old, he went to Breen, Colorado to help his brother, Clark Ferree, by farming. After the death of Clark in December 1918, he went back to Matheson, Colorado where he continued his education at Ariba School. He achieved an 8th grade education. On April 22 1928, Vern married Miss Pauline Lucile Smith in Limon, Colorado at the bride's parents home. They lived on the Ferree family homestead where all six of their children were born. On July 5 1937, Pauline died due to complications from childbirth. Vern took his 3 oldest children to the Odd Fellows Home in Canon City, Colorado and adopted his three younger children to local couples, so that the state could not take custody of them. Vern married Mrs Louanna Noy French on June 4 1939 in Burlington, Colorado. He was then able to go get his three oldest children and take them home. Vern was shot by a .22 caliber handgun that left a furrow from the top of his nose through his forehead on Monday, April 29 1940. Although he lost a lot of blood, he was able to walk to the ambulance that took him to St Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Vern died at the hospital due to a bad blood transfusion, one hour and twenty minutes after being admitted. Vern's body was taken to the Swan Funeral Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His body was removed by Seal Mortuary and taken to Limon, Colorado where funeral services were held on Friday, May 3 1940 at 2pm, with burial in the Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, Colorado. He was laid to rest next to his first wife, Pauline. Those survivng him were his wife, Louanna; his six children, Herbert Vern, Philip Benjamin, Beulah Fern, Delores Lucile, Gladys Norma and Paul Ellsworth; his parents, Philip and Theodosia Ferree; His brother Arthur Ferree; and his sisters, Miss Mary Ferree and Mrs Nellie (James) Feary. Those who proceded him in death were his grandparents; three brothers, Clark, Haris and Oscar Ferree; and one sister, Iva Ferree. The bereaved members of the family and the entire community were shocked over the tragedy.
