Description	:	Verna Ann Best, age 92, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Minnie (Junker) Groeneveld on November 19, 1924, in Aplington. Verna graduated from Aplington High School and attended Iowa Teachers College where she received a teachers’ certificate. Read More	Verna Ann Best, age 92, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of John and Minnie (Junker) Groeneveld on November 19, 1924, in Aplington. Verna graduated from Aplington High School and attended Iowa Teachers College where she received a teachers’ certificate. After her graduation, she taught in rural Grundy County schools for a few years. On September 4, 1946, Verna was united in marriage with Mervin John Best at her parents’ home south of Aplington. Verna and Mervin made their home and farmed on the Best family farm for nearly 50 years. Verna was a homemaker and also helped Mervin with the farm chores. In 1995, the couple built a new home in Aplington and moved to town. Verna was a member of Aplington Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and evening youth group. She loved to cook and go shopping with her grandchildren. Verna enjoyed singing, playing piano, and traveling with Mervin, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Verna died Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes. She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Mervin on October 16, 2012; one daughter, Clareen Byl on October 4, 2016; her parents; one brother, Henry Groeneveld; and one brother-in-law, Howard Best. Verna is survived by one son, Ron (Terri) Best of Aplington; seven grandchildren, Scott (Melody) Byl, Dr. Kevin (Dr. Katrina) Byl, Jeremy (Fiancée. Hilary Cameron) Byl, Jamie (Shannon) Reinke, Kelley (Shawn) Rotgers, Angela Best, and Christopher (Christon) Best; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, June Best of Aplington; two sisters-in-law, Lila Groeneveld and Marian (Wallace) Brouwer, both of Aplington and their 52-year employee, Vernon Oltrogge. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Aplington Baptist Church with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Aplington Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the family.
