She was born Dec 2, 1901 in Ostrander to local pioneers Walter and Emma (Johnson) Dixon. She moved with her family to Rainier in 1916 and attended Rainier High School. Mrs. Foley worked on a railroad section gang during the labor shortage of World War I. She taught school in Goble, Pilot Rock and Pendleton. FOLEY Longview Daily News, Tuesday, June 19, 2001 Verna I. Foley Former piano teacher, Verna Irene Foley, 99, died June 17, 2001, at her Kelso home. She was born Dec 2, 1901 in Ostrander to local pioneers Walter and Emma (Johnson) Dixon. She moved with her family to Rainier in 1916 and attended Rainier High School. Mrs. Foley worked on a railroad section gang during the labor shortage of World War I. She taught school in Goble, Pilot Rock and Pendleton. During the summers, she attended teachers' colleges in Bellingham and in Monmouth, Ore. She volunteered as a nurse's aide at the old St John's Hospital and taught Red cross first aid classes during World War II. She worked as a piano teacher out of her Kelso home for 58 years teaching as many as 50 students some years. She remained friends with many of them. She was a lifelong member of the Kelso First Presbyterian church, singing with the choir and acting as choir director for three years. While in her 80s she volunteered in the HOSTS reading program at Wallace school and at the age of 85, she was helping to deliver Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed traveling, visiting Egypt, Japan, Europe and more. She enjoyed her poodle and 10 year companion GeeGee. She was the matriarch of the family and an inspiration to many and will be remembered for her strength. She married James Foley in Walla Walla, on Nov 10, 1923. He preceded her in death after 59 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were a daughter Guinevere Howton; and three brothers, Lloyd Dixon, Saville Dixon and Ed Dixon. Survivors include a son, Patrick Foley of Atherton Calif.; a sister. Margaret Beck of Aberdeen; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kelso First Presbyterian Church. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today or from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Columbia Funeral service.
