Description	:	Verna Myrtle Tohm was born Dec. 16, 1913 to Albert and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tohm née Smukal. Albert Tohm came to the Irvine District from North Dakota in 1911 to homestead NE20-12-2-W4, returning to North Dakota for the winter months. He moved to the homestead permanently in 1913 with his wife Elizabeth and seven children. Lizzie passed away Nov. 11, 1918 during the Flu Epidemic, when the youngest child was six months old. Verna was raised on the Tohm family farm and attended Wilkinson School (part SW30-12-2-W4M) until she finished grade eight, then she went out working to earn her own living. She worked at a sugar beet factory at Raymond and as a domestic in various homes in Picture Butte, Claresholm, Vulcan, and on the Minor Ranch, all in Alberta. For one job the criterion was to be able to wash woolens without matting or shrinking them, which she was able to do. That was a major job because there was a whole year's supply of woolen blankets to wash. It took many wash days to get them all clean. She did house work for a living until she returned home and got married. On March 25, 1938 Verna married Edwin (Ed) Martin Engel, one of the neighbor boys. After their marriage, Ed and Verna lived on his homestead (SW35-12-2-W4M) in summer, and in winter moved to George Mackie's log house, which Ed had moved about half a mile to the south (SE33-12-2-W4M) to be closer to a source of water. They made the move between the homestead and log cabin every year until they bought the Albert Tohm home place (N1/20 12-2-W4M) in 1949. They moved there permanently so they would be closer to the school bus route. Verna herded sheep while Ed did spring fieldwork and she did the cooking during harvest time. Verna was a great cook and the taste of her roast lamb, headcheese and homemade ice cream comes readily to mind. Ed and Verna raised three children on their farm, Maurice Divar (b Oct. 25, 1938), Estelle Junius (b June 20, 1920) and Dorne Edwin (b July 15, 1942). Ed farmed with his son Dorne for many years and continued to live on the farm, even after Verna’s passing, Apr. 2, 1983. Ed died, age 80, on Feb 15, 1991 and is buried with Verna in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, AB.
