In 1911, Albert, Theodora, Alfred Carl (b Mar 16, 1909), Edwin Martin (age 1) and Albert’s brother Carl Gustav Paul (age 27) immigrated to Canada and resided in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Read More	Edwin (Ed) Martin Engel was born March 12, 1910 to Albert Gustav and Theodora Linda Christina Engel née Laasch in Glover, North Dakota, USA. In 1911, Albert, Theodora, Alfred Carl (b Mar 16, 1909), Edwin Martin (age 1) and Albert’s brother Carl Gustav Paul (age 27) immigrated to Canada and resided in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Albert obtained a homestead in 1911, but the family stayed living in Medicine Hat for 3 years at the 900 block of 7th Avenue, now Kingsway. While living on the homestead, Albert and Theodora had seven additional children: Nettie Dora (b July 7, 1912), Violet Luella (b Oct. 21. 1916), Walter Alvin (b Feb. 18, 1918), Junuis (June) Viola (b June 20, 1920), Allan Albert (b Sept. 19, 1922), Percy Grover (b Sept. 5, 1924) and Nina Linda (b Nov. 19, 1929). Ed was raised on the family farm and attended Wilkinson School (part SW30-12-2-W4M) until he finished grade eight, then he went out working to earn his own living. As a teen, he played the saxophone and guitar in a dance orchestra. The band played at Graburn Gap, Elkwater and to north of Irvine, AB. Ed worked on threshing crews each fall, eventually getting to the Nanton and Didsbury districts, stooking and pitching bundles during the harvest season. He also learned to be a separator operator. Ed applied for a homestead in 1933 (SW35-12-2-W4M). He lived in a bunkhouse before he moved George Mackie's log house about half a mile to the south and closer to a source of water (SE33-12-2-W4M). On March 25, 1938 he married Verna Myrtle Tohm, one of the neighbor girls. After their marriage, Ed and Verna lived on the homestead every summer and moved back to the log house for the winter months. They made this move every year until they bought the Albert Tohm home place in 1949 (N1/20 12-2-W4M). They moved there permanently so they would be closer to the school bus route. Ed bought some sheep in the early 40's. Verna would herd sheep during spring fieldwork and do the cooking during harvesting when the children were young. Ed learned to shear sheep, first with the hand shears and then in later years he used mechanical clippers. Ed had minimul formal education, but he was very well read and liked to discuss a wide range of topics at the supper table. He was a large, gentle, man. Ed and Verna raised three children on their farm, Maurice Divar (b Oct. 25, 1938), Estelle Junius (b June 20, 1920) and Dorne Edwin (b July 15, 1942). Ed farmed with his son Dorne for many years and continued to live on the farm, even after Verna’s passing, Apr. 2, 1983. Ed died, age 80, on Feb 15, 1991 and is buried with Verna in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, AB. Son Maurice Divar d. Nov 25, 1996. His ashes were spread on his farm north of Irvine, AB (S1/2 33-12-2-W4M). Daughter Estelle Junius Engel née Koenig d Mar 1, 2003.
