Interment with military honors will be in the Beemer Cemetery. Vern passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at the West Point Living Center in West Point, NE. Vernon Adolph Balak was born on July 4, 1923 at Howells, NE to Adolph and Tracie (Mendlik) Balak. He grew up in Howells and graduated from Howells High School in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Army on December 4, 1942, serving in the European Theatre during World War II, and was honorably discharged on February 14, 1946. After returning from the military he moved to Beemer and began working at Kuzelka’s Meat Market. On October 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Janice Hass at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beemer, NE. The couple made their home in Beemer and Vern worked for the Nellor family on their farm. He later went to work for Walnut Grove Feeds before opening Vern’s IGA in Beemer and operating it until his retirement. Vern later worked part-time for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads and was a volunteer driver for Colonial Haven Nursing Home. What Vern enjoyed most about retirement was the time he could spend working on his tractors. Vern was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beemer, Beemer American Legion Post #159, and was former member of West Point Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #4912. In his younger years, Vern played baseball for the town team and also coached the American Legion Baseball team for a couple of years. Vern enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Survivors include- Son-Rodney and wife Janice Balak of Colorado Springs, CO and family Bryan and wife Dawn Balak and children-Emma & Julia Scott and wife Kari Balak and children-Zach, Alex & Anna Daughter-Roxanne Wieseman of York, NE and family Stephanie and husband David Halpine Leslie Wieseman Alex Wieseman Kyle Wieseman Son-Royce and wife Mary Balak of St. Joseph, MO and family Bradley and wife Katrina Balak and son Carter Jonathan and wife Lauren Balak Michael Balak Katherine Balak
