Vernon was born here Sept. 1, 1943, and attended the Oil Hill schools, where he would have been enrolled in the eighth grade this fall. He was a member of the Oil Hill Community Church. He was active in the junior baseball league, where he pitched for the Morris Oil team. Surviving are his parents; one sister, Marva Jean, of the home; and his grandmother, Mrs. Minnie A. Cloyes, of 408 North Summit. Plans to name a new, lighted junior baseball diamond to be built here in the future after Vernon, as a memorial, were announced this morning by Harold Bigelow. The action was taken by several local business men, he said, because of Vernon's activity and interest in the junior league. Contributions will not be solicited, but may be made to Mr. Bigelow, with any checks payable to either him or junior baseball. The Mitchell family has asked that money for floral pieces be contributed to the fund for the baseball diamond. El Dorado Times July 9, 1956
