Description	:	Vernon was the oldest of 7 children born to Otto John and Lena Marie (Schwisow) Bartels. He was baptized shortly after birth at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1934. He married Letha Holtmeier at Zion on May 18, 1947 and was the father of two sons: Lloyd and Lyle. ------------------------------------- The following was provided by Janey Sittner from the files of her mother Edith Meyer: Vernon Henry Bartels was born to Otto Bartels and Lena Schwisow Bartels on February 27, 1920 at Tobias, Nebraska. He was the oldest of seven children in the family. He was received into God's kingdom through Holy Baptism on March 21, 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church of Tobias, Nebraska by Pastor E.O. Potratz. He was confirmed in his baptismal vows at the same church on March 25, 1934 by Pastor W.G. Nau. He was a lifelong member of Zion. Vernon served in the United States Army from August 1942 to November 1945 and spent 16 months in the European Theater of War. On May 18, 1947, he was united in marriage to Letha Holtmeier of Tobias. God blessed this union with two sons, Lloyd Allen and Lyle Dean. Vernon was called to his eternal home on Wednesday, September 14, 1994 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lincoln; at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 18 days. He is survived by his wife, Letha; Lloyd and his wife Cindy of Bruning; Lyle and his wife Karen of Tobias, two granddaughters, Tammy and Andrea Bartels; one stepgrandson, Mike Jessen of Lincoln; brothers, Everett, Gaylord and Willard and sisters, Leona Klatwitter (sic), Dorothy Brandt and Donna Steinbrook; nieces, nephews, and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church near Tobias, with Pastor Michael E. Reiners officiating. Military graveside services were provided by Tobias American Legion Post #311. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery.
