Description	:	Vernon Herman Huneke, age 87, passed away at the Wilber Care Center on Jan. 25, 2014. He was born on Jan. 30, 1926, at the family farm near Wilber to August and Anna (Burger) Huneke. Vernon was baptized on Feb. 21, 1926, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clatonia by the Rev. Emil Monhardt and his sponsors were his uncles, Walter and Edward Burger. Read More	Vernon Herman Huneke, age 87, passed away at the Wilber Care Center on Jan. 25, 2014. He was born on Jan. 30, 1926, at the family farm near Wilber to August and Anna (Burger) Huneke. Vernon was baptized on Feb. 21, 1926, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clatonia by the Rev. Emil Monhardt and his sponsors were his uncles, Walter and Edward Burger. He was confirmed on April 16, 1939, and his verse was John 6:68: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Vernon attended grade school at District 47 near Clatonia and graduated from Wilber High School with the Class of 1944. He started a Brown Swiss dairy herd on the farm near Wilber, where he was born. He entered the Army in 1951 serving until 1953. He was stationed in Okinawa for 18 months as a radar operator. After the service, he returned to the family farm to continue the Brown Swiss dairy. He was united in marriage to Leona C. Schroeder on Sept. 13, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in DeWitt by Rev. Ervin Janssen. To this union two sons were born, Stewart and Steven. Vernon enjoyed working outdoors, watching Nebraska Husker games, being with his family and grandchildren and attending their activities. He showed his Brown Swiss at county and state fairs and held various offices in the Brown Swiss Association. He was a member of Mid-America Association, Dairy Herd Improvement and also served as a board member. He served on the Wilber-Clatonia School Board, the Educational Service Unit 6 Board, was a life member of the Wilber Future Farmers of America Alumni, a life member of Zion Lutheran Church of Clatonia, where he held many offices and a member of Wilber American Legion. Vernon leaves to mourn him his loving wife, Leona; sons, Stewart and wife Joleen of Wilber and Steven and wife Kathy of Sabetha, Kan.; five grandchildren, Barrett and Faith of Wilber and Jordan, Levi and Mariah of Sabetha, Kan.; sister-in-law, Dorothy and husband Richard Niemeyer of Pickrell; brother-in-law, Lawrence and wife Carolyn Schroeder of Lincoln; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Anna (Burger) Huneke; parents-in-law, Paul and Charlotte (Spilker) Schroeder; brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Anna Huneke; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Arthur Obering; niece, Norene Obering Fitle; and nephew-in-law, Rob Sebek.
