Description	:	Vernon L. Allard, 90, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege, NE) passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Lancaster Manor in Lincoln. Vernon was born February 8, 1920 at home on the family farm north of Holdrege, Nebraska, the son of Ivar and Minnie (Harder) Allard. Allard, 90, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege, NE) passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Lancaster Manor in Lincoln. Vernon was born February 8, 1920 at home on the family farm north of Holdrege, Nebraska, the son of Ivar and Minnie (Harder) Allard. After his education and working on the farm, Vernon served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Tunisia, and was wounded in action at Kasserine Pass, which led to his Honorable Discharge from the service in 1943. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the European African Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one battle star. On April 17, 1949 he married Elnora "Jo" Strawder and they had three children: Doug, Rita and Mitzi. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Vernon worked as an auto mechanic, a self-employed carpenter and later owned his own carpet cleaning business. In 1970, his wife, Jo, preceded him in death. Vernon continued to reside in Holdrege until 2001, at which time he relocated to Lincoln to be near his family. Vernon chose the Evangelical Free Church faith as his own. While in Holdrege, he was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Elks Lodge and the Holdrege Country Club. He also enjoyed baseball, softball, bowling, golfing, and will be remembered for his fine woodworking craftsmanship. Besides his wife, Jo, he was preceded in death by: parents; and sister, Viola Magill. Vernon leaves to mourn his passing: son, Doug Allard and wife, Barb of Lincoln; daughters: Rita Allard of Lincoln and Mitzi Meyer and husband, Dana of Campbell, Nebraska; grandchildren: Derek and Sydney Meyer; brother, Vincent "LaVale" Allard and wife, Loraine of Holdrege; and a host of relatives and friends. Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege, NE.
