The second son of Vernon and Helen (Kellenbarger) Souders, he was born Dec. 10, 1936, in Merna, Neb. His sister was born several years later. Read More	MCMINNVILLE, Ore. — Vernon Lee Souders, 77, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, in McMinnville, Ore. The second son of Vernon and Helen (Kellenbarger) Souders, he was born Dec. 10, 1936, in Merna, Neb. His sister was born several years later. Raised in Ortello Valley south of Anselmo, he attended local rural schools, graduated from Merna High School in 1954, and received his bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 1958. The next five years, he worked for two different oil companies, the old Texas Board of Water Engineers, served a short stint in the U.S. Army as part of his standby reserve status, and attended the University of Texas-Austin and UNL for three additional semesters. In 1963, he began working as a geologist-hydrologist for the old Conservation and Survey Division of UNL. In that job, he worked throughout Nebraska until the end of 1998 except for several months in 1965 when he attended special classes at the University of Arizona, for much of 1968 and some of 1969 when he traveled around the world, and in 1992 when he was on sabbatical at Bechtel Engineering in San Francisco. On March 21, 1970, he married Rebecca L. Stehl of Scribner at her sister’s house in Lincoln. Their sons, Paul and Karl, were born in that city. In 1973, the family moved to Scottsbluff, where he had an office at the UNL Panhandle Station until 1982. Returning to Lincoln in that year, they lived and worked there until the end of 1998, when he and Becky retired from the university and moved to Oregon. Vernon L. is survived by his wife; son, Paul, and wife, Jennifer (Smith), Souders and their children, Orion, Iris, and Ada, and son, Karl, all of Portland, Ore. Also surviving are his sister, Margaret A., and her husband, Dr. William Schreiber, of Loveland, Colo,; his sister-in-law, Arlene Lou (Selk) Souders of Wilmington, N.C.; and cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends the breadth of the nation. His parents and brother, James Walter, preceded him in death. For several reasons, Vernon L. was a volunteer bell ringer for the Salvation Army in Lincoln and he and Becky became a longtime two-person volunteer team ringing for them in McMinnville, Ore. A strong believer in the good the Army was doing in the local area and around the world, he would urge any memorials be sent to them or to a similar organization.
