Barclay was born September 22, 1924, the son of Jens and Anne (Hanson) Barclay in rural McHenry. He grew up and attended country school near Mose, ND. Vernon was baptized and confirmed at the Naeroen Church near Mose. On October 10, 1944, he married Joyce Avis Grafsgaard in McHenry. Vernon entered the United States Army on May 21, 1945. He was discharged on July 10, 1946, and returned to the McHenry area. Vernon farmed until 1967 when his son Ronnie took over the farming operation. He worked for Melroe from 1967 to 1976, but still found time to help out on the farm. He worked at the Binford School with Green Thumb and spent three years helping his son, Rick, at Barclay's Welding and Repair shop in Binford. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, target practice and drawing and painting. He came from a very musical family, the played the guitar, violin and piano. Vernon will be deeply missed by his wife, Joyce Avis Barclay, rural McHenry, ND; five children, Renae (Don) Briss, rural McHenry, ND, Ronnie (Donna) Barclay, rural McHenry, ND, Rick (Ginny) Barclay, West Fargo, ND, Julie (Duane) Dramstad, rural Binford, ND, and Robert (Joni) Barclay, Binford, ND; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert (Marie) Barclay, Nevada, MO, and Andor Barclay, Grand Forks, ND. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, foster parents, grandson, Kaare, Sister Elna Bakko, brother, Odin Barclay, and half-brother, Lorentz Barclay.
