Later he acquired platinum properties near Twin Bridges in Montana. He owned Packard, Hudson, and Chevrolet dealerships and owned the Ennis, Montana newspaper. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. What He Said About Himself ~~~~~~~ Vernon Hughes detailed childhood memories in a short autobiography. He was born on his parents' 80 acre farm of "good bottom land" in a newly built house. His parents traveled in a "beautiful buggy ... one of the first rubber-tired buggies in Pike County." The family moved to Middletown where he said his grandfather, an uncle and aunt ran a barber shop. From the shop he "got all the pennies accumulated in the till" and spent them on treats. He recalled the popular swimming hole in the river that "was a fright I've never forgotten." He said, "Once I stepped off in a hole over my head and upon bobbing up for the second or third time hollered for my Uncle Julius. He whirled and jumped from the opposite bank at least 15 feet to a spot where I was about to drown." The autobiography recalls the flora and fauna and especially "the wonderful bond of affection that existed between all of my kinfolk." Vernon recalls his last trip to Middletown: "The last time I saw my Grandpa Orr was in 1933 when I returned to Middletown for a few weeks visit. He and I went swimming together in the creek and had a fine time. He must have been in his seventies then but he swam better than I did." Vernon's parents moved near Ralston, Iowa when he was in second grade and he had a two-mile walk to a one-room school. His father farmed, and his mother missed the sociability of family and known neighbors. After two years, his father sold out and moved to Montana near where his parents had moved. A year later Vernon and his mother joined his dad. "I arrived in Manhattan, Montana in the winter of 1925 with my mother. A different train was expected so no one met us at the depot. Because there was no phone, we walked the two miles out to the farm. I had never seen moonlight so bright ... it was because of the altitude and clearness of the air." "In 1927 we moved to Billings, Montana, where my father entered the insurance business." For the first time, Vernon was living in a real city and said he "got a lasting impression of the last days of the Roaring Twenties."
