Vernon Thomas Stokes, son of Milton Burton and Marybelle Coddington Stokes, was born May 31, 1901 south of Harvard and died Nov. 7, 1988 at the Wayne County Hospital, Corydon, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 6 days. He attended rural schools in this area, later moving to Kansas where he lived until 1922. He worked at various jobs, though farming was his first love. He was a scoutmaster and taught a boys' Sunday School class, as well as serving as church superintendent in his younger years. He remained active in his church as long as his health permitted. He was married to Hilda Watson Jan. 31, 1927, and the couple had one son. Hilda died in April 1978, and he spent the rest of his life in the home of his son and family. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Hilda; and a half-brother, Ray Shear (sic Shearer), and half-sister, Anita Shear (sic Anneta Shearer). Survivors include his son, Dwight and wife, Elaine; one granddaughter, Beverly Stokes. Also, two sisters, Zealia Jellison, Garden City, KS; and Glenna Pierce, Otis, KS; and aunt, Anna Holder, Cheyenne, WY; a brother-in-law, Halga Jellison, Allerton; and two sisters-in-law, Babe Shriver, Chariton; and Hazel Gartin, Indianola Manor.
