Handley Sr., age 94, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 1998, at Parkview Convalescent Center in Billings. Vern was born in Williston, N.D., on June 28, 1904, the son of James and Flora Handley. In 1911, in covered wagons and on horse back, the family moved west to homestead north of Miles City, MT. Vern was educated there, later attending Hanson Technical School in Fargo. Handley Sr., age 94, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 1998, at Parkview Convalescent Center in Billings. Vern was born in Williston, N.D., on June 28, 1904, the son of James and Flora Handley. In 1911, in covered wagons and on horse back, the family moved west to homestead north of Miles City, MT. Vern was educated there, later attending Hanson Technical School in Fargo. N.D., and then returning to the farm. His skill on a horse got him a job with C.B.C. Ranch. On April 12, 1930, Ver married Alma Gertrude Lilienthal and they would spend the next 68 years together. He joined the Miles City police department in 1930 and rose to chief of police there for the last seven years of his 26 years with the department. Following his retirement in 1956 he and Alma moved to anchorage, AK, where Vern was the head jailer and alma the matron at the local jail. Returning to Montana in 1958, they settled in Billings and Vern worked with the Yellowstone County sheriffs department and took other general maintenance jobs to fill his time. Survivors include his wife, Alma, and son, Vernon Warren Handley, Jr., of Billings; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Olson in 1995; three brothers, Roy, Harold, and Chester; a sister, Ethel Boraas; and his parents. Visitations will begin Tuesday morning at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th. St. W. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Smith West Chapel, with cremation to follow. Interment will be at a later date in terrace Gardens Cemetery.
