Pleasant Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD Vernus Henry Buchholtz, son of Gustav and Edith (Lamp) Buchholtz, was born February 23, 1922 in Ward, SD. He grew up there and attended school at Verdi, MN before helping his parents on the family farm. Vernus entered the United States Navy on September 16, 1942 at Sioux Falls, SD and served on the USS Tallulah during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on November 25, 1945 at San Pedro, CA, he worked for a time as a dairyman in California. He then moved to Sioux Falls, SD and continued working as a dairyman. Vernus was united in marriage with Bonnie Anderson in Sioux Falls on July 1, 1955. The couple lived in Sioux Falls before moving to Valley Springs, SD in 1978. Vernus then began work as a custodian and bus driver for the Brandon-Valley School District. He retired in 1998. Vernus was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He also enjoyed horses and playing the accordion. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Bonnie; three children, Kevin Buchholtz, Valley Springs, SD, Herbert Wheeler and his wife, Donna, Sandy, OR, Yo Sherman and her husband, Gary, Salem, SD; seven grandchildren, Billie Johnson and her husband, Rick, Gladstone, MO, Zach Buchholtz, Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa Milton and her husband, Greg, Vancouver, WA, Lori Lee and her husband, Dave, Vancouver, WA, Michael Sherman, of California, Laura Sherman, Astoria, SD, Tami Sherman, Salem, SD; six great-grandchildren; one step-daughter, Margaret Hancock and her husband, Jim, Springfield, OR; one sister, Arlene Hansen and her husband, Raymond, Las Vegas, NV; and a host of other relatives and friends. Vernus was preceded in death by two daughters, Yvette and Diane; his parents; and a sister, June Belson. Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Faith Lutheran Church following the memorial service.
