Description	:	Vertus L. Johnson, 81, died Thurs. at the White Care Center, White, SD. Vertus was born Jan. 2, 1923, at Madison, SD, to Henry and Louise (Gulbranson) Johnson. He grew up in Moody County and attended many different schools. His mother passed away when he was 1 1/2 years old. He then lived with his grandma, Betsy Gulbranson. Vertus was born Jan. 2, 1923, at Madison, SD, to Henry and Louise (Gulbranson) Johnson. He grew up in Moody County and attended many different schools. His mother passed away when he was 1 1/2 years old. He then lived with his grandma, Betsy Gulbranson. In 1933, he lived with Marvin and Doretta Gullickson and attended South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, graduating in 1941. On Nov. 28, 1942, he married Berniece Lenander at Flandreau. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944, and was discharged in 1946. He worked for Willis Ellefson in the John Deere Implement business for 6 1/2 years. He moved to Napa Valley, CA in 1962 and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic. He retired in 1988 and returned to Flandreau. Vertus was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, VFW and the Operating Engineers Local Union #3. He is survived by his wife, Berniece, White; 4 nieces; 3 nephews; 2 sisters-in-law, Darlene Johnson, Anahiem, CA, and Margaret Johnson, Minneapolis, MN; and his special companion, Queenie. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and a sister. Funeral services will be Mon., 2 PM, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Clare Cemetery. Visitation begins at 2 PM Sun. at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.
