Victor Lavern Bauer, son of Jacob and Marie (Latzel) Bauer, was born on April 14, 1925 at their family home northwest of Spalding, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE. Vic attended the Stucco School District 19 through the 8th grade and high school at Spalding Academy, graduating in 1942. Following graduation, Vic farmed with his father and helped area farmers shucking corn, along with working at the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, NE. He began working as a mechanic for Spalding Implement in 1947. On September 15, 1950 Vic entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean War as a cook at Fort Riley, KS. With the rank of Sergeant, he was honorably discharged on September 14, 1952. He continued in the Army Reserves for the next five years while farming with his father and working for Spalding Implement. On October 7, 1957 Vic was united in marriage to Leila Jean French at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE. To this union six children were born: Jeannie, Kathleen, Dennis, Trish, Janet, and Edward. In 1963 Vic became part owner and manager of Spalding Implement. Vic was a lifetime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, NE, along with being a member of St. Michael’s Men’s Club and Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Spalding Volunteer Fire Department and the James Kessler American Legion Post #299. Vic enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling, but most important to him, was his faith and his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leila of Spalding, NE; six children: Jeannie (Gene) Hitchler of Spalding, NE; Kathleen (Bruce) Otte of Winter Park, FL; Dennis (Linda) Bauer of Spalding, NE; Trish (Michael) Jarboe of Allen, TX; Janet (Jeff) Gierhan of Lincoln, NE; Edward (Stacey) Bauer of Spalding, NE; 19 grandchildren: Kim (Kevin) Hetrick, Kristina (Jacob) Ladwig, Mark Otte, Cassie (Joseph) Bianco, Nicki (Richard ) Woznick, Sara, Emily, Byron, and Jared Bauer, Madison and Jackson Jarboe, Jory, Nycholas, Taylor, and Lilly Gierhan, Jacob, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Rachel Bauer; seven great-grandchildren: Brayden Booth, Riley, Kirsten, Avery and Kate Ladwig, Alliyah and Payton Hetrick and Baby Girl Woznick on the way; one sister: Sister Collette Bauer OP of St. Catharine, KY; two sister-in-laws Josephine Bauer of Grand Island, NE; Eileen Bauer of Spalding, NE; brother-in-law Don (Kathy) French of Boise, ID; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Vic was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Vince, Laurence, Bob, Andy, Fr. Jake, and Rich; sisters: Margaret Connelly, Rose Marie Bernt, and infant Patricia.
