LEWISTON TRIBUNE 11 JUN 2014 Vida Ellen Shoemaker, 92, a longtime Palouse resident, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the Bella Vista Adult Family Home in Pullman. Vida was born July 6, 1921, in rural Latah County. She was the fifth of six children born to Crawford William and Katey Lee (Wysong) Patton. She attended the Dailey country school and graduated from Palouse High School in 1938. In 1941, she married Stephen B. Shoemaker, and they made their home in Palouse, where Stephen and a partner owned and operated Palouse Welding and Machine Shop. Stephen and Vida had two children, Margaret (Peggy) and Stephen P. Shoemaker. Vida was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker who enjoyed being part of the community. She was a leader in Campfire Girls. Boating and picnics were cherished family events. She loved her family and friends and cared about what happened in their lives. By nature she was competitive and a perfectionist, always striving to do a good job. Education was important to her, and she continued to research a variety of topics throughout her life. For 14 years she was the Palouse branch library manager through the Whitman County Library system. Vida encouraged people of all ages to continue to read, and she cherished the friendships she made while working at the library. Her interests included American history, family history, antique collecting, gardening and travel. She was a member of the Xenodican library club, Chapter AE of P.E.O. and the Palouse Federated Church. After their children were grown, Vida and Steve took several trips across the United States to tour historical landmarks, attend sporting events and go to family reunions. Steve died in 1993. In September 2008, Vida suffered a frontal lobe stroke. Since that time she has received care from some excellent caregivers. The family offers special thanks to Lorraine Fulfs and the kind and helpful staff at Bella Vista Adult Family Home. Vida is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Pat); her son, Steve (Robin); her sister, Virginia; her grandson, Benjamin (Erin); her granddaughters Hailey Jane and Courtney Anne; her step grandsons, Keith (Leanne), Matt (ShaiAnn); and seven step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Crawford Lee Patton and Howard Patton; and her sisters Regina Town and Velma Stephens. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palouse Federated Church, 635 N. Bridge St., Palouse, followed by lunch at the church and burial service at 1 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse. Memorial contributions may be made to the Palouse Federated Church or to the Xenodican Scholarship Fund, C/o Treasurer Iris Holway-Price, 1110 E. Ninth St., Palouse, WA 99161.
