She was born April 28, 1909, in Phelps County, Bertrand, Neb., to Edward and Elsie (Coker) Dyer. She was the oldest of three children. Her family came to Hemingford by train in 1919 and purchased a farm southwest of Hemingford near Sioux County. Vilma boarded and graduated from Elwood High School. Read More	HEMINGFORD - Vilma Lucille Ball, 96, died Friday, June 3, 2005, at the Hemingford Community Care Center, where she had resided for seven years. She was born April 28, 1909, in Phelps County, Bertrand, Neb., to Edward and Elsie (Coker) Dyer. She was the oldest of three children. Her family came to Hemingford by train in 1919 and purchased a farm southwest of Hemingford near Sioux County. Vilma boarded and graduated from Elwood High School. She then taught two terms of school before she was married to Henry A. Ball on July 23, 1928, at Laramie, Wyo. To this union four children were born - Twila, Verle, Sandra and Kent. They celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing away in November 1986. They farmed near Hemingford for 18 years. Vilma was the "Sunny Slopes" news correspondent for 18 years, and a 4-H leader for 15 years. The family moved into Hemingford in 1948. In 1954 they moved to North Platte where Vilma taught junior high math for 17 years. Vilma was a family oriented person who enjoyed genealogy and family reunions. The co-wrote a book on Hemingford history in the 1930's and contributed many stories for the 1986 Hemingford Centennial Book. She enjoyed flower gardening, collecting antiques making homemade Christmas cards from lace and ribbon. Funeral services were Monday, June 6, at the United Methodist Church at Hemingford, with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Burial was in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
