Read More	The Mapleton Press, 3 October 1974: Vincent Everett McCall, son of Verter and Katharine Shanahan McCall, was born February 9, 1908, near Ute, lowa, and died September 22, 1974, following a heart attack at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He was 66 years, 7 months and 15 days old. Mr. McCall attended schools in the Mapleton and Ute areas, and in 1929 started working as a maintenance man for Monona County until going into the United States Army on May 7, 1941. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and in Massachusetts and in October of 1941 he was sent to the Philippines and then to Corregidor. He was captured on Bataan by the Japanese in April 1942 and made the Death March to the Philippines where he was a prisoner of war and later taken to Tokyo, Japan where he remained a prisoner for forty-two months. He was found by the Red Cross and brought back to t h e United States where he was hospitalized. He received his discharge on May 16, 1946. Following his discharge he returned to work on the Monona County Maintenance crew and worked with them until his retirement on April 9, 1972. Mr. McCall was married to Beatrice Jacoby on September 5, 1949, in Mapleton. Three daughters were born to this union. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton and Owen Hollister Post 496 American Legion. He had been an apiarist since he was nine years old and continued in the bee business until his death. Survivors include the widow, Beatrice, three daughters, Mrs. Allan (Joan) Copple of Sloan, Mrs. Ronald (Margaret) Lee of Onawa, and Patricia at home; two grandsons; two brothers, Verter of San Antonio, Texas, and Norbert of Ute; five sisters, Mrs. Edna Hodges of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mrs. Harvey Jacobs and Mrs. Gilbert Larsen, both of Napa, California; Mrs. Dale (Margaret) Barnes of Ute and Mrs. Cecilia Wessling of Danbury. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton on Wednesday, September 25, 1974, with Father Walter Bruch officiating. Pallbearers were Jerry Wessling, Veryle Buck, Herluf Kafton, Herbert McCall, Robert Diimig, and Harlan Theobald. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military rites were held by the Loren Hollister Post # 496 of the American Legion of Mapleton.
