Vincent George Shumack was born in Buffalo township, Linn County, Iowa, April 11th, 1866, and died in Marion, Iowa, Feb. 24, 1912, aged 45 years, 1 months and 13 days. He received his education in the [missing] schools of Marion, passing the 8th grade and at the age of 16 entered the grocery store of B.F. Mentzer, where he remained until 1888, when he formed a partnership with A.E. Chislett, and began business on the site of his present store. In 1891 he disposed of his interest in this store and purchased a grocery store in Boone, Iowa, taking as a partner Ben F. Bowman, son of Capt. A. Bowman of Marion. In 1893, having sold the store in Boone, he and his brother, F.A. Shumack, bought back the store in Marion, and re-opened it on its present site under the name of Shumack Bros. In 1894 fire destroyed the building and stock; and on the sixth day after the fire, in a temporary building erected in the park, these brothers were filling orders and selling goods in the regular way. After the rebuilding of the half block north of the park, which had been wholly destroyed by the conflagration known as "Marion's big fire," the business was resumed at the old location, now known as the Keyes building, and continued until 1896 when F.A. Shumack retired and he, with Geo. M. White, having bought out the firm of Twogood & Downie, which business in now conducted by F.A. Shumack and W.B. Sebern, under the name of Shumack & Sebern. After the retirement of his brother, Vincent G. conducted the business to the time of his death. As a boy he was active, bright and tireless and developed into a man of rare foresight and business acumen. Until stricken with a disease which terminated in his death, he was considered one of the first business men of this city, and it might be truthfully said, of the state. He was public spirited; generous to a fault; of a kind and effectionate[sic] disposition; sociable, genial, and charitable. Many will remember him for his unfailing kindness in time of trouble. No child ever went to bed hungry, if he knew of it, whether the parents had credit or not. He had a deep practical sympathy for the poor and the unfortunate, and his hand was always open at the call of need or want. He had a natural capacity for great things; acute brain power, marked executive ability and intense energy. He was married to Miss Addie Bromwell, June 14, 1893, who with their little daughter Irma, survives him. He left two brothers, Anthony, senior member of the firm of Shumack & Reiter, and Frank A., senior member of the firm of Shumack & Sebern; both of Marion, and one sister Mrs. Mollie Krall, of Oklahoma. Death claimed him at the meridian of life. The funeral services were held in the home on Monday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. S.R. Beatty, pastor of the Methodist Church, the interment being in Oak Shade cemetery.
