The Marion Sentinel Thursday August 19, 1943 Mrs. Addie Shumack, Member of Pioneer Family, Died Monday Mrs. Addie Shumack, a life-long resident of Marion, and a member of a pioneer Marion family, died at three o'clock Monday morning, at her home, 815 Fifth avenue, Marion, following an extended illness. She was 80 years of age. The daughter of James E. and Mary Bunnell Bromwell, she was born on a farm east of Marion on April 28, 1863. Her father came to Marion in 1839, and the old records list his marriage as the first in Linn county. Mrs. Shumack attended the Squaw Creek country school, was graduated from Marion high school in 1881, and took musical training at Coe college. She then studied at the Highland Park Normal school in Chicago. She taught piano in Marion for many years. She was music supervisor in the Springville schools for two years, and just previous to her marriage, held a similar position in the Marion schools. On June 14, 1893, she was married to Vincent G. Shumack, who died here February 24, 1912. A daughter, Erma Louise Shumacak[sic], died at the age of ten on May 24, 1912. One sister, Caroline and 4 brothers, William, Leonida, Thomas and James E., preceded her in death. She was the last of the Bromwell family. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mrs. Shumack joined the Methodist church as a girl of ten. She was a member of Marion chapter, No. 183, O.E.S., Cary club, the Shakespeare club, the Reading circle, and the Robert Mitchell Womens Relief corps. For many years Mrs. Shumack directed the Methodist church choir and taught in the Sunday school. For twenty years she was the leader of the Gleaners division of the W.S.C.S., and was very active in the missionary societies of the church. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. A.W. Henke, pastor, in charge. Interment was in Oak Shade.
