SHINN.-Vincent Shinn was born near Salem, Columbia county, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1819, and died in Tipton, Iowa, Jan. 4, 1898, aged 78 years, 3 months and 26 days. He was married to Rachel A. Williamson Sept. 19, 1850; came to Cedar county a year later and lived on a farm till 15 years ago, when his health failing, he came to Tipton. Of the six children born to them, two, Wm. B., of Humboldt county, and Mrs. Bateman, now of Monticello, only survive. He was looked upon as a generous hearted man, showing a truly helpful spirit to others and that in a quiet and unostentatious way. In 1872 he united with the Baptist church, of Mt. Zion, contributing the ground for the church and cemetery, where in now his last resting place. For the past year and a half Mr. Shinn has been a great sufferer. It seemed to be his lot to be worn out by that much dreaded and painful malady, cancer, from which no rest could be secured till released by death. The care his case required, which has lovingly ministered to, often made him feel and express himself as a burden on those doing all in their power for his comfort, and he was anxious to be released from his suffering. Death puts an end to all the suffering and afflictions incident to life. He leaves his companion and two children to mourn their loss, who have the sympathy and condolence of many friends in their affliction. The remains were interred in Mt. Zion cemetery, and services were held at his late home by Rev. C. A. Gelwicks.
