VIOLA SLATER Pioneer Burleigh County Woman Died Friday at Age 72 in Indianapolis Funeral services for Mrs. Viola Slater, Burleigh County woman who died at the age of 72 at the home of a daughter in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 1, were conducted by Rev. Walter E. Vater at Sterling Monday. Burial was in the family lot in the Sterling cemetery. Mrs. Slater had been a resident of Burleigh county since 1885. Her husband, B. R. Slater, died in January 1935. She had made her home with a daughter, Mrs. John Welch, of Menoken, and was in Indianapolis on a visit at the time of her death. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Louisa Doan, of Sacramento, Cal., 8 children, 15 grandchildren and three [great-]grandchildren. The children are, in addition to Mrs. Welch, Mrs. Effa Ethridge, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. William Marvel, Cummings, ND; Mrs. Fred Jacobson, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Walter LeWarn and Miss Jeanette Slater, Cincinnati, Ohio; Ralph Slater, Scenic, S. D.; and Albert Slater, whose address was not available. Pallbearers were Eric Slovarp, Harry O'Neil, George Manley, Elvin Hoover, Marshall Dralie and F. H. Pillsbury. Honorary pallbearers, all pioneer friends of Mrs. Slater, were Steve Triplett, Fred Corn, George Lewis, William Hughes, Edward Olson and G. A. D.; Francis Slater, Minneapolis, Minn.; Bertie Lewarn, Cincinnati, O.; Jeannette Slater, of Cincinnati, O.; Albert Slater, of St. Louis, Mo., departed this life Friday evening, October 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ethridge, 3313 Graceland ave. For further information call MOORE & KIRC, Ch. 1806. ********************************* Prairie Trails to Hi-Ways, 1978 Bismarck-Mandan Genealogical and Historical Society Bird R. and Viola (Corder) Slater At the age of 23 years, Bird Rosecrans Slater and his wife, Viola, came to Burleigh County, ND in 1885. Bird Slater, son of Henry and Sara Ann Parks Slater, and Viola Corder were married Oct. 11, 1883 in Louisville, IL. They settled first near Sterling and later moved to Brittin, in Logan township. Mr. Slater farmed and also did some carpenter work around the community. Mrs. Slater was noted for always raising a good garden, although it often meant carrying water in buckets by all the family members. She had a great knack of preserving the food from the garden and also the home butchered meat that delighted many a neighbor who happened to be a guest in their home at meal time. Genuine "neighborliness" was the customer in those days and Sunday dinners usually were shared with someone followed by discussions of the Bible as part of the enjoyment of the afternoon's visiting. Mrs. Slater's mother, Mrs. J. H. Burton, lived nearby and was an excellent Bible scholar. Many times ministers from the area would come by horseback to have a good lively discussion with her on some Bible topic. Most of the daily needs could be purchased from the little town of Brittin which consisted of a general store, operated by Jack Galloway; an elevator; a blacksmith shop; a post office; a depot; and a church. However, once in awhile a trip into Bismarck was necessary usually going one day and returning the next. On real cold trips, the family cat was taken along. A bed was made for the cat right on top of Mrs. Slater's feet which provided warmth needed for her feet. Thirteen children were born to the Bird Slater's, 2 of whom died in infancy, and 1 daughter, Grace, died at the age of 12 years. The eldest of the children, Henry Oscar, born Oct. 18, 1884, married Polly Chalfin, a daughter of A. J. Chalfins, pioneer Burleigh county residents. They farmed between Sterling and Moffit. Four children were born to them and while they were still small Polly developed blood poisoning and died quickly in 1917 at the age of 34. The following year, Oscar, as he was called, contracted the flu in 1918 and passed away. The grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bird Stater, raised the 3 older children -- namely, Elsie (Mrs. Harold Irvin of Bismarck), Howard, now deceased, and Elmer, living in Detroit. The baby, Marion, was raised by Polly's sister and brother-in-law., Mr. and Mrs. John Baker of Hazelton. She now lives in Colorado with her husband and twin daughters; Anna, born Jul 21, 1886, taught school several years, married John O. Welch of Menoken, and farmed with her husband until her death on Mar. 30, 1973; Effie, born Nov. 18, 1888, married Charles Bluitt and later William Ethridge and lived in Indianapolis. Effie had 1 son, Abraham, who was killed in a car-bicycle accident at the age of 12 years; Leora, Born Apr. 8, 1890, married Harvey Stull and lived in the Red River Valley until her death in 1926. Two sons, Lynn and Lester, were born to this couple. Ralph, born May 8, 1892, married Clara Prater and lived at Rapid City, SD before moving west to California and Washington. They have 2 sons, Richard and Eugene. Martha, born Oct. 29, 1894, married William Marvel, farmed i Logan township until their home burned and then moved to Hunter, ND. Their family consisted of 2 daughters, Isabel and Eleanor, and a son, Dwight; Albert, born May 6, 1897, and his wife, Elsie, lived in St. Louis and had 1 son, Jay Frank. Frances, born Jan. 28, 1899, married Archie Marvel and lived in St. Paul, MN. A daughter, Viola Hoye, lives i Cincinnati; Bertie, born Mar. 7, 1904, married Walter Lewarn and lived in Detroit. A son, Richard, lives in Detroit. Jeanette, born Sept. 19, 1909, married Arthur Young and lived in Cincinnati; Anna Welch, who passed away in Mar., 1873, was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters.
