She was a grand lady who lived her life as a shining example of faith, family and friends. Her formal education ended after the sixth grade when she had to leave school to help care for her younger brothers and sisters, but she never stopped learning. Read More	Atlantic News Telegraph, The (IA) - July 17, 2007 Viola Elizabeth Drees passed away July 14, 2007 at the age of 98. She was a grand lady who lived her life as a shining example of faith, family and friends. Her formal education ended after the sixth grade when she had to leave school to help care for her younger brothers and sisters, but she never stopped learning. At age 16, she enrolled in sewing class where she learned to draft her own patterns, eventually sewing for her family. On May 1, 1928, she married Edward Drees, and they were parents to nine children. They farmed in the Halbur, Manning and Exira areas, until his death in 1968. She was his constant caregiver during his last illness. She loved playing bingo and cards. Her greatest heartaches besides the loss of her husband, were the loss of her three sons, Arden in 1942, Edward in 1962 and Dennis in 1975, and her son-in-law, David Faga in 2005, grandson, Brian Rule and grand-son-in-law Ron Herr in 2007. She is survived by her children, Margene (Jerry) Rule, Merlin (Betty) Drees, Lyle (Donna Dennis) Drees, Jan (Dick) Legg, Donna Faga and Larry (Connie) Drees. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Joanne (Ron) Dunkerson, and Rosemary Drees, her brothers Joe (Lillian) Eischeid, Andrew Eischeid, sister Helen Heithoff, 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, many relatives and friends.. Her last three years were spent at the Exira Care Center where she was loved by all. She was the most awesome woman we have ever known. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 17 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Exira. Interment will be in the Holy Trininty Cemetery in Exira. Casket bearers will be Kirk Andersen, Zachary Faga, Cory Drees, Randy Rule, Gary Drees and Molly Drees. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira is in charge of the arrangements.
