Description	:	NEWCASTLE, Neb. -- Viola J. Birkley, 86, formerly of Newcastle, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Elms Health Care Center in Ponca, Neb. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gospel Chapel in Newcastle, with the Rev. Chuck Myers officiating. Burial will be in Maskell Cemetery, rural Maskell, Neb. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Viola was born April 14, 1919, on the family farm near Newcastle, the daughter of Frederick and Kathryn (Johnson) Gould. She graduated from Newcastle High School in 1937 and attended Wayne State College. She was a teacher in country schools in Dixon County, Neb. She married Roy B. Birkley on Aug. 27, 1942. They farmed near Newcastle until moving into Newcastle in 1976. Roy died Aug. 8, 1991. She was a member of the Gospel Chapel and active in the Ladies Missionary Society, serving as president for several years. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, a son, a granddaughter and her husband, a grandson, two great-granddaughters, two sisters and their husbands, a brother and his wife, two sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; three brothers, Donald, Melvin and Max Gould; a sister-in-law, Sallee Gould; and a brother-in-law, Carrol Schram. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, the Gospel Chapel in Newcastle or the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca. Sioux City Journal (IA) - Friday, January 20, 2006.
