She lost her hearing as a result of scarlet fever. In 1930 she graduated from the Omaha School for the Deaf. She and Ben were the parents of five children. Viola and her sister Nellie Palmer both married Throm brothers. Viola married Ben and Nellie married William. Both families lived their married lives in Marysville, Marshall, Kansas.
