Description	:	Viola S. Courter was a daughter of Peter Courter (1843-1916) and Margaret "Bell" (Lee) Courter (1845-1896). A distant relative of hers was Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general. Viola was a lifelong resident of southeast Iowa. She married John Warren Hannah (1870-1950) July 2, 1891, in Salem, Iowa. They were the parents of six children. A son, Harold, died in infancy, and five daughters lived to adulthood. Their daughters were: Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker (1892-1958), who married Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957). VIOLA HANNAH FUNERAL SATURDAY Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian church here for Mrs. Viola S. Hannah who died suddenly at her home on Wednesday evening, August 16. Last rites were in charge of Reverend O. L. Byrns and interment was in Elmwood cemetery. Mrs. Hannah had suffered a light heart attack about two weeks before her death but had recovered and was about to be about the house. Her death follows that of her husband, John W. Hannah, who died here on January 30. From 1913 until 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Hannah operated a grocery and variety store in Morning Sun and in this business they became known to many people in this community. Viola S. Hannah was the daughter of Peter and Belle Lee Courter. She was born in the Winfield community on January 17, 1870. On July 2, 1891, she married John W. Hannah and for a number of years they lived on farms in the Mt. Pleasant area. In 1913 they moved to Morning Sun and lived here the remaining years of their lives. Mrs. Hannah was a member of the Presbyterian church in Winfield. She is survived by five daughters; Mrs. S. N. Walker, Morning Sun; Mrs. Bertha McDowell, New London, Mrs. M. J. Hickenbottom, Alameda, California; Mrs. Ollie Oakley, Morning Sun; Mrs. Robert Richardson, Crawfordsville. Also surviving are two brothers, Oscar and Harlan Courter, Winfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Imo Ogg, Mt. Pleasant, and Miss Ruth Courter, Frenchburg, Kentucky. Fifteen grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren also are living. The husband, parents, five brothers, and two sisters are dead.
