Pastor Barbara Krumm will officiate. Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. Violet Irene Kempf was born on April 21, 1925 to Julius and Thrisa (Merkel) Kempf. She was baptized on May 21, 1925 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church by Rev. Theo M. Haag. She was confirmed on June 25, 1939 in Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Long Lake, SD by Rev. F.J. Doyen. She attended rural school in Dickey County through the eighth grade, two years of high school at Forbes, ND, then transferred to Ashley High School where she graduated with the Class of 1944. Then she worked at Northern State Teacher’s College at Aberdeen, SD as a stenographer. She married Willis Woehl of Fredonia, ND on July 1, 1945 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, rural Forbes, ND by Rev. F.J. Doyen. They farmed until 1967, when they moved into Fredonia and in 1971, they moved to Kulm, ND. When her twin boys started school, she started to work for LaMoure County as an in-home-care specialist. She held that position for 22 years and five months. She retired due to Willis’ ill health and cared for him. In 1998, they moved to Ashley to live near the hospital. When living on the farm and all through the years, they would clean ducks and geese for out-of-state hunters. She washed all the feathers and made pillows. She also made pillowcases, blankets, embroidered dish towels and made rugs and toys for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also donated many blankets to the nursing home in Ashley and Ellendale, ND. She was a Sunday School teacher for several years. Also active as a Foster Grandparent and received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2011. There was a lot of work involved in raising nine children without running water and indoor plumbing, and butchering chickens and geese for food. Her prized possession are her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Grateful for having shared Violet’s life are her children – Carol (Rodney) Uecker, Langdon, ND; JoAnn Nitschke, Ashley; Bonnie (Patrick) McCloskey, Fargo; Diane Woehl, Edgeley, ND; Janell Woehl, Sturgis, SD; Duane (Sandy) Woehl, Aberdeen; John (Renee) Woehl, Kulm; Verlyn (Rhonda) Woehl, Valley City; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She went to heaven to meet her parents; husband, Willis of 64 years; son, Vernie Woehl; grandson, Derek Wade Woehl; three brothers, Reinie, Walter, and Victor Kempf and two stillborn brothers; and three sisters, Hilda Nies, Lenora Bucholz, and Janet Haneke. There were six sets of twins in her family: children, Vernie and Verlyn Woehl; grandchildren, Robin and Corinne Nitschke; great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Taylor Woehl, Keegan and Kylie Schock, and Kennedy and Taylor Uecker. Honorary Casketbearers are Violet’s granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
