She was born Oct. 23, 1925, in Ottumwa to Clovie and Alta Elliott Walter. Bill and Myrtle Toopes adopted her. She married Harold F. Pherigo on Nov. 2, 1941; he died on Aug. 16, 1996. She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn McCoy, Gwen Mahaffey, and Rose Smith, all of Ottumwa, and Gail Rupe of Bloomfield; Three sons, Don of Lisbon, Maine, Bill of Indianola and Harold Pherigo Jr. of Ottumwa; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Letha Rupe of Ottumwa and Catherine Dabney of Waterloo; and four brothers, Charles and Jim Walter, both of Agency, Rich Walter of New Hampton and Jack Walter of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Imogene Snook; and a grandson. The service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. LuEllen Worth of The Way of Peace Ministries officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, David McCoy Jr., Douglas and Jon McCoy, Tony Mahaffey, Todd and Scott Smith and Donnie Pherigo.
