All day Thursday the city waited in suspense expecting each moment to hear the worst, but not until evening, just before sunset, when the tolling of the Baptist church bell announced that the soul of one dear to us all had passed on to a brighter world, did the veil of sadness fall. On Friday the city schools were closed entirely out of respect for the dead. Violet Marshall Staley, the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Marshall, was born at Greenwood, Wis., July 15, 1870. While yet a child of only nine years her parents emigrated to Hamlin county, this state, where her girlhood was spent. In 1890, on Sept. 15th, she was married to F.H. Staley in the village of Castlewood, at which place the couple took up their residence at once. In the spring of 1895 they removed to Sheffield, Illinois, but in 1898 again returned to South Dakota and located at Clerk Lake, where she lived until the time of her death. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church, having joined that organization in 1892, and at her demise was still a faithful church worker although her chosen denomination is not represented in this city. For years she was leading singer in the Baptist choir, possessing a rich, clear soprano, until on account of throat trouble her voice failed. At Sheffield, Illinois, Mrs. Staley joined the Rebekah Lodge, in which order she was ever a prominent member, presiding one term over the Sheffield lodge, and being the first presiding officer of Clear Lake lodge, serving two terms in that capacity. She was elected representative to the Grand Lodge recently, but her illness prevented her attending. Mrs. Staley was the mother of three children, the youngest of which is 7 months old. Such in brief is the history of her life, full, round and complete, but taken away in the very prime of her womanhood. "Life's candle is burnt out" for her and just as it was giving forth its best illumination. She was a dutiful daughter, faithful and affectionate wife, a kind and tenderly loving mother. Her friends she numbered by those she knew and at all times was a leading spirit among them due to her wining manners and kind regard for others. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church and was one of the largest ever held in the city. Only the ladies were able to get seats in the church and many of them were forced to stand and some to remain outside. The lodges of the Odd Fellows, Masons and Rebekahs attended in a body, but so big was the crowd the men could not get within the church. The large delegation from Castlewood showed the esteem in which she was held at her old home. The funeral service was conducted by the Rebekahs, the Rev. Hoyt, Presbyterian minister of Castlwood, delivering the address. At the grave the Lodge of Rebekahs used their beautiful burial ritual and tenderly and solemnly performed the last rites over the body of their departed sister. The grave was lined with the beauty of the prairies and over the casket were strewn in profusion cut flowers of exquisite beauty and fragrance. The Advocate feels that in Mrs. Staley Clear Lake has lost one of its best women and under circumstances most sad. To the bereaved parents and the husband with the little ones who scarce realize the great loss they have sustained, we offer our heartfelt sympathy and believe that the greatest consolation of the moment lies in the thought that "she is not dead, but sleepeth."
