Read More	Respected Vienna Citizen Passes On Dr. F.H. Staley Dies Saturday Dr. F.H. Staley Passed Away Last Saturday after a Lingering Illness. Funeral Held on Tuesday. While this community has been expecting the news of the death of one of our most honored citizens, Dr. F. H. Staley, for several days, still when the end came quietly last Saturday, April 2nd, it came as a shock to the many friends of the doctor. Dr. Staley was taken suddenly ill on January 3rd, this year, and since then has been confined to his bed, most of the time being under the care of a trained nurse. A few weeks ago thinking that it would be best for him, he was taken to the Luther Hospital at Watertown, but only remained there for a short time, being brought back to his home here in Vienna at his own request, where he remained until the Grim Reaper came and ended his earthly sufferings last Saturday. Deceased was 72 years, 2 months and 28 days of age at the time of his death. Dr. F.H. Staley was born in Bucyrus, Ohio on January 5th, 1860, where he lived until the family moved to Mount Vernon, Iowa, where they resided until 1880. Then he accompanied his brother, J.M. Staley, his mother and her second husband, W. J. Clugston, he went to Watertown, S.D. Here he accepted a position as teacher and taught the first two terms of school ever held in the Rauville school district of Codington county. He also took and proved up on a homestead seven miles northeast of Watertown, later selling the land for money to pay his way through Rush Medical College in Chicago, Ill. He took his preparatory studies in the normal department of Cornell College at Mount Vernon, Iowa, and graduated from the medical college in 1886. After graduation the doctor located for practice near Mount Vernon, Iowa, and later came to Castlewood, South Dakota, where he opened an office and remained there for seven and a half years. From Castlewood he removed to Clear Lake, S. Dak., practicing there for fourteen years and then going to Colorado, where he resided for about three years. In the spring of 1914 he returned to this state, locating in Hazel, practicing there until May 2nd, 1918, when he came to Vienna, conducting a practice here up to the time that he was taken ill last January. Dr. Staley was married in 1890 to Miss Violet Marshall of Castlewood, and to this union was born three children, all of whom survive. They are Winifred M., wife of Phillip Waterman, of Grand Valley, Colorado; Melroy M. of Aberdeen, S. Dak.; and William F., of Youngstown, Ohio. Mrs. Staley passed away in 1902. On June 15th, 1904, Dr. Staley was united to Miss Lena E. Tetzlaff and to this union was born four children, who also survive. They are Marion F., a teacher in the schools of Salida, Colorado; Margaret E., who is employed on the hospital staff of St. Luke's Hospital, of Duluth; and Maxwell F., employed at KSOO radio station, at Sioux Falls; these two being twins, and Eugene F. Staley of this city. Dr. Staley is survived by one brother, J. M. Staley, of Clear Lake, S. Dakota. While at Clear Lake deceased joined Phoenix Lodge No. 129, A.F. & _, later becoming a member of the Vienna lodge of the same order, also being a member of the Hazel Camp _ W.A., the membership of this order being detained up to the time of his death. While in Colorado the doctor joined the Palisades Lodge I. O.O.F. of Palisades, Colorado, dropping out of this order some time after his return to South Dakota. He was also a member of the Watertown District Medical Society, and at one time serving as president of that organization. Other medical orders to which he held membership were the South Dakota Medical Society and the American Medical Association. The remains lay in state at the undertaking parlors of the Community Burial Association in this city from two o'clock until four o'clock Monday afternoon, and the funeral was held Tuesday morning at ten o'clock from the local Congregational church, services being conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. Reinmuth. From there the remains were taken to Clear Lake, S. Dak., where funeral services were conducted at 2:30 in the afternoon from the Masonic Temple. Both services were under the auspices of the Masonic order. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his first wife in the family lot at the Clear Lake cemetery. Dr. Staley was perhaps one of the best loved residents of this community. Having practiced as a physician for so many years, his name was perhaps as well known in the homes of this community as the names of the members of each individual family. As a man and member of this community, we believe that Dr. Staley was perhaps one of the most liked personages in this section. Always cheerful, he had a good word for everyone and regardless of the time, season or condition of the weather, he was always ready to respond to a call. And before the days of the automobile those of us who know it meant to drive miles in a wintry storm realize how well Dr. Staley stood in the community over which he had charge as a physician. Living in this and our adjoining community of Hazel for so many years, he built up a practice which he held up to the time of his death, and we doubt if the doctor could name one who could say a word against him, if he were living today. The loving esteem in which he was held was attested by the many floral offerings tendered him, and the deep sorrow into which the community was plunged when the news of his death became known. We could no doubt write many columns pertaining to the life of the deceased gentleman, but all who knew him in life can sum things up in a few simple words-"Gone, but not forgotten." To the sorrowing relatives we join with the entire community in extending our heartfelt sympathy to them in their hour of bereavement. (Vienna, Clark County, SD, Thursday, April 7, 1932)
