Beck, 102; Golden Hill advocate Violet M. Beck, a political activist who was particularly interested in preserving the Victorian residential character of Golden Hill, died July 3 in her home at the age of 102. Miss Beck, who lived alone, had resided in the Golden Hill community for 93 years. She was a graduate of UC-Berkeley, where she studied art and languages and was at Berkeley during the San Francisco earthquake. Because of the quake, there were no formal graduation exercises at the university that year. Miss Beck was a teacher for 40 years and taught art, English, French, German and Spanish in a number of county high schools, including Ramona in 1918 and Mountain Empire in 1930. She also was a substitute teacher from 1922 to 1951 in National City, San Diego and Coronado. She enjoyed her students, said her grand-nephew, David Sutton of Alpine. "She never married and was proud of it. She said that she had enough children -- the students she taught." Miss Beck was also a painter and her works -- mostly in oils -- include scenes of old San Diego. The family has the bulk of her work. She wrote and published a book, "The Home Folks," telling of her own family background and her observations about ways of life in early California, especially in the San Diego area. During interviews, she told of cowboys and driving the cattle from Cuyamaca and Corte Madera ranches, over four days, stopping overnight in Viejas Valley, Flinn Springs, and Black Mountain sheep camp, to Hardy's slaughterhouse in San Diego, a distance of about 44 miles. She also told of the stagecoach, pulled by four to six horses, which in one day could make the trip from Lakeside to Descanso -- about 23 miles -- with a change of horses in Alpine. Those were "nice days," she said, "when people didn't think so much of the dollar and more of friendship and good fun. There was honesty. You could leave something and go back and find it, and we never thought of locking our doors." Miss Beck was born Dec. 15, 1886, in Chicago. Her parents, Louisa and August Beck, were natives of Germany. He joined the U.S. Army after the Civil War and was a friend of Gen. U.S. Grant. He was sent to Fort Stockton about 1895 when 40 houses made up San Diego. She seldom complained. Instead, she took action. Some 15 years ago, she was unhappy about sitting in the sun waiting for a shuttle bus at University Hospital. She started a drive that did not end until a canopy was erected over the bus stop. Her grand-nephew has the framed proclamation which the Board of Supervisors presented to her in recognition of her successful campaign. Miss Beck went door-to-door with petitions concerning height limits and preservation of old homes in Golden Hill. She was fighting for things she believed in "right down to the wire," her grand-nephew said. She was a member of the Humane Society and supported the Cat Protection Society. In lieu of flowers, her grand-nephew said, memorial contributions in her name should be sent to the San Diego Humane Society, 887 Sherman St., San Diego, Calif. 92110, or, the National Cat Protection Society, 9031 Birch St., Spring Valley, Calif. 92077. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow at Cypress View Mortuary chapel. Cypress View is in charge of arrangements.
