Both young folks have a host of friends who wish them a long and happy married life. They will make their home at Hillside. Canon City Record May 5, 2004 Virgie R. Koch, 90, died April 26, 2004, in Silvercliff. She was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Boise City Okla., to James and Flossie (Boardman) Shugart. She married George H. Koch March 31, 1934, in Westcliffe. Mrs. Koch moved to the Wet Mountain Valley as a young girl and met and married her husband, they worked together on their ranch and in his other endeavors. She continued to ranch until her death. Mrs. Koch enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing and taught sewing to those who requested. She was a member of Eastern Star, Custer County Cowbelles and various church groups and committees. She is survived by her children, Eva J. (Charles) Fithian, Kansas City, Mo. and James F. (Jacqueline) Koch, Los Altos, Calif.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Koch was preceded in death by her husband; parents and two brothers. Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Wednesday, April 28, at Community United Methodist Church and burial will be in Ula Cemetery in Westcliffe. Contributions may be made to the Community United Methodist Church, 204 S. KOCH, 90 Funeral services were held yesterday in Westcliffe for long-time Valley resident Virgie R. Koch. Mrs. Koch died Monday, April 26, 2004, in Silver Cliff following a lingering illness. She was 90. She was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Boise City, Okla., to James and Flossie (Boardman) Shugart. She moved to the Wet Mountain Valley from Lamar in 1933 at the age of 19 and later met and married her husband, George, whose ancestors came to the Valley from Germany in 1871. Together, they operated their ranch near Hillside. She also assisted in her husband's many other endeavors which included harvesting and storing thousands of tons of ice each year, primarily to cool the rail cars that shipped vegetables from Valley farmers. They also operated sawmills which provided timber for the mines surrounding Silver Cliff, and enjoyed using a dance hall built on the family ranch. Mrs. Koch continued to remain active on the family ranch until just recently when she became a resident of the VALI assisted living center in Silver Cliff. Mrs. Koch was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Westcliffe. She had been active in Eastern Star, the Custer County Cowbelles, and various church groups and committees. Mrs. Koch was known as a wonderful cook and an accomplished baker. She enjoyed sewing and, in earlier years, taught those skills. She married George H. Koch on March 31, 1934. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Koch is survived by a daughter and a son: Eva J. (Mrs. Charles) Fithian of Kansas City, Mo., and James F. (and wife, Jacqueline) Koch of Los Altos, Calif. Also surviving are four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, April 28, at the Community United Methodist Church in Westcliffe. Interment followed at the Ula Cemetery here. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Community United Methodist Church at 204 S. Sixth St., Westcliffe, 81252.
