Description	:	Virgil A Brown, one of the first settlers of Cloud County and one of the founders of Concordia, died at his residence, 432 East Sixth street yesterday. Death was caused by apoplexy. Read More	Virgil A Brown, one of the first settlers of Cloud County and one of the founders of Concordia, died at his residence, 432 East Sixth street yesterday. Death was caused by apoplexy. Mr. Brown was born on a farm near Columbus, Ind. His parents died when he was a youth and he was reared In the home of an aunt, his father's sister. In August 17, 1861, he enlisted in the Company C. 6th Infantry and was inactive service his entire three, years and one month in the army. Over 200 of the 1,000 men in his regiment were killed, Brown receiving slight wounds. After the war he returned to the home of his uncle and March 2, 1866, married Catherine Magaw of Pennsylvania and the same year emigrated to Kansas. He first settled in Wabaunsee County, where he farmed rented land and the following year came to Cloud County, settling on Wolf Creek, in Buffalo township, three and one-half miles southwest of Concordia. He and Philip Kiser were the only settlers on the creek for a time. Mr. Brown witnessed the killing of White by the Indians, August 22, 1868, and was a member of the militia formed to protect the settlers from their ravages. This company was disbanded but never discharged. Mr. Brown lived on the homestead until 1891 when he retired from active life and moved to Concordia, the site of which he had helped to choose. Mr. Brown was married twice, his second wife dying in 1916. He was a member of the local post of the G. A. R. having been post commander for a number of years and he had been post adjutant for the past five years. Mr. Brown was a member of the city council for six years and always stood for the betterment of this community. Four children all of whom were here at the time of his death survive. They are: Mrs. L. A. Pearson of this city, Mrs. W L. Acton, Scott Bluff, Nebr. Mrs. C. G. Ross, Wichita: and J. W. Brown of Tulsa, Okla. Funeral services will be made from the Methodist Episcopal church from which he has been a member and active worker for a score of years. Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p. m. Interment will be made in Pleasant Hill cemetery with the G. A. R. conducting the ritual service.
