Description	:	Virgil C. Rieke, 85, of Sterling, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001 in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.rn. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at Christ United Methodist Church with services concluding at the church. The Rev. T.L. Phillips will officiate. A private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Mr. Rieke was born on July 6, 1916 to Earl and Carrie (Knudsen) Rieke in Sterling.He attended school in the West Plains area and graduated from Sterling High School in 1935. He farmed and ranched with his stepfather, J. Harry Monroe, before he was called into the U.S. Army on Feb. 16, 1942. He served in the Quartermaster Corps, going to Hawaii in May 1942 and on to Iwo Jima in February 1945. He was discharged in September 1945. After his discharge he returned home to farm and ranch. On Nov. 16, 1947 he married Marjorie Schuman Schroeder. He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Club, Odd Fellows Lodge, Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation, School Re-organi zation, American Legion Post No. 20, AARP and Senior Citizens. Mr. Rieke is survived by his wife, Marjorie Rieke of Sterling; two stepsons, Paul Schroeder of Denver, and Victor Schroeder and wife Lynn of Lynnwood, Wash.; two daugh ers, Margaret Sprenger and husband Greg of Sidney, Neb., and Virginia Anderson and husband Dale of Sterling; two sisters, Florence Goodwin and husband Steve of Wellington, and Werdna Nelson of Sterling; a brother-in-law, Gilbert Schuman of Sterling; two sisters-in- law, Mary Johnson of Tucson, Ariz., and Dorothy Webb and husband J.F. of Lakewood; seven grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church Parking Lot Fund.
