Virgil Dean, the son of Albert Clark and Mari Amelia (Land) Monroe, was born November 4, 1927 in Castalia, Iowa. He served in the U.S Army as a Military Policeman during the Korean War. Virgil was united in marriage with Lois Peterson on September 2,1951. The couple farmed in Dover Township, Fayette Co, IA for over forty years. Virgil also worked at the sale barns in West Union and Waukon for several years. After Lois passed away in 1992, Virgil moved to Fennimore, Wisconsin in 1994. He returned to Ossian in 2000 and entered the Ossian Senior Hospice Home. Virgil was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian and transferred to St Peter's Lutheran Church, Eldorado, IA after First Lutheran church closed. He was also a member of the Brockton-Hammerland Legion Post #503 in Ossian. Virgil is survived by his children: Julienne (Randy) Smith, Leo (Cheryl) Monroe, LeVirgil (Marie) Monroe, Leland (Lynn) Monroe, Layne (Diane) Monroe and Jeff (Angie) Monroe, fifteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two brothers, Forest and Fieldon (Fritz), one sister Rose Keller and four sisters-in-laws. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, who died on July 9,1992; his daughter Nancy, who died in infancy; his parents, A.C.and Marie Monroe; his father and Mother-in-law; four brothers, Alvin,Bernold,Curtis and Carroll; two sisters, Benita Heins and Marlene Schissel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 4,2015 at St Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa with Rev Ginny Olson as the Officiant. Burial with Military honors will follow at First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ossian,Iowa
