Virgil grew up in Nance County, and attended District #58 School. He enlisted in the United States Navy on Aug. 28, 1942, serving during World War II. Read More	Thanks to contributor #47275474; "Mr. Knopik was born in Nance County southeast of Fullerton on Aug. 11, 1922, to Frank C. and Carolina (Lesiak) Knopik. Virgil grew up in Nance County, and attended District #58 School. He enlisted in the United States Navy on Aug. 28, 1942, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 17, 1945, with many distinguished medals. While in the service, his unit was involved in many sea battles and invasions. He was involved with the evacuated prisoners of war in Nagasaki, Japan. He also was present at the signing of the peace treaty with Japan which ended World War II. In December of this last year he was given a certificate verifying that he had crossed the equator and was considered a "Shellback". On Nov. 26, 1946, he married Irene Agnes Torson at St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward. They made their home in Fullerton. Mr. Knopik worked for Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. for 35 years. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Holy Name, a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Eagles Club, all of Fullerton, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Knopik, and three sisters, Katie Cassey, Elizabeth Stopak and Ethel Kava. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Irene; a daughter and son-in-law, Karon and Dan Horn of Fullerton; a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Jackie Knopik of Wichita, Kan.; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Eddie and Lee Knopik of Fullerton, Frankie and Katie Knopik of Lincoln, Richard Knopik of Columbus, Louie and Donna Knopik of Grand Island and Jerry and Rita Knopik of Plattsmouth; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Benny Gdowski of York, Lorraine and Darwin Hamel of Columbus and Rosie Zaruba of Columbus; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Knopik of Grand Island. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Shannon Horn, Tanya Horn, Dani Horn, Heather Zebley and Ryon Knopik; and three great-grandchildren, Page Zebley and Cole Zebley and Kierian Knopik."
