Frye, 82, of Arlington died March 14, 2001, at Bryan Lincoln General Hospital East in Lincoln. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 17, at the Arlington Community Church with the Rev. Lynn Martin officiating. The United States flag was folded and presented by the Arlington Honor Guard of V.F.W, Post #8332 and American Legion Post #71. Interment was in the Arlington Cemetery. Virgil N. Frye was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Elkhorn to James T. and Clara (Widgery) Frye. He moved to Arlington in 1931. He worked for several area farmers and also worked part-time at Marshall Nurseries. On April 16, 1938, he married Betty M. Schlapfer at Logan, Iowa. Mr. Frye served in the U. S. Army during World War II from July 24, 1944, until Aug. 17, 1946, and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific. He had worked for the Chicago and North Western Railroad from 1939 to 1944, and then continued working for the railroad after his discharge for the Army. He worked for the railroad until 1968, and then worked part-time for Don's Electric & Plumbing, and later for Reed Electric, both in Arlington. Mr. Frye was a member of the Arlington Community Church, where he served in most of the church offices; was an over 50-year member of the V.F.W, Post 8332 at Arlington, where he had served as past commander, was a 55-year member of the American Legion Post #71 of Arlington, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 in Fremont. He was also an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife, Betty, daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Darrell Hilgenkamp of Arlington, sister, Dorothy Petersen of Wahoo, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Decker, and three brothers, Jonas, Lawrence and Henry Frye. Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Community Church, the Arlington Town baseball team, and the American Legion Baseball program.
