Sterling Victim of Apoplexy Drops Dead While Walking from Kitchen to Dining Room - Shock to Her Husband Mrs. Virginia Florence Sterling, wife of J. Gardner Sterling, a member of the advertisement composing department of the Daily News-Record, dropped dead from a stroke of apoplexy last night at 5:45 o'clock while walking from the kitchen to the dining room at her home on East Market Street. Mr. Sterling stepped into the kitchen just as his wife fell to the floor. He quickly summoned a neighbor, Daniel Eaton, and before they could lift her to a couch in the dining room she gasped and died. Dr. (illegible) was also summoned. He said death was due to apoplexy. Mrs. Sterling had been complaining for a week with a severe headache and pains in her head. The family thought she had a touch of grip, now so prevalent in this section. She had been in the yard, assisting her husband with the chores. Then she did not complain of feeling badly. She walked into the kitchen ahead of Mr. Sterling and dropped dead without warning almost before his eyes. The sudden death of Mrs. Sterling came as a great shock to her husband, and it was some time before he could control his emotions. Before her marriage, Mrs. Sterling was Miss Virginia F. Runcle and was the daughter of the late Jacob S. and Ann Eliza Runcle of McGaheysville, where she was born on October 6, 1874. She and Mr. Sterling were married October 6, 1898, and she had living in Harrisonburg ever since. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters - Mrs. Carl Wiseman and Miss Mildred Sterling, of Harrisonburg. One brother, Milton J. Runcle, of Staunton, also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Methodist Church, Rev. J.J. Rives conducting the services. Interment will be in Woodbine cemetery. Mrs. Sterling was a devoted wife and mother. Between her and her husband there was a strong bond of affection and devotion not often found in the modern days. "She is a real helpmate." is the way Mr. Sterling often referred to her. (Daily News-Record, Harrisonburg, VA, Sat., March 20, 1926) I believe Virginia Florence Sterling is the daughter of Jacob S. and Ann Eliza Runkle, and niece to George Ribert Dennett. In George Robert Dennett's obituary (posted as a photo on 16546733) it states that he is survived by "one sister, Mrs. A. E. Runcle, who makes her home with his neice, Mrs. J.G. Sterling of this city." Also, in the obituary of James W. Payne (gravesite unknown, so no copy posted), it states that his wife "was Miss Emily Dennett, a sister of G. R. Dennett, of McGaheysville; and Mrs. Eliza Runkle, who makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Gardner Sterling, in Harrisonburg." Finally, the 1850 census lists Ann Eliza as a sibling of Geo.
