Mrs. Fine died September 29, 1979 in the Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda, where she had been transferred from the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Shearer Cemetery. Viva Amelia Fine, daughter of Joseph Milton and Amelia (Walter) Shields, was born near Ivyville in Taylor County, February 4, 1896. During her childhood she resided in Adams and Page counties, but most of her lifetime was spent in Taylor County, Iowa where she was reared, educated and engaged in farming with her husband, Ralph. Viva was a member of the Siam Christian Church where she was baptized in September 1915. On March 7, 1917, Viva was united in marriage in Clarinda, Ia., to Ralph Douglas Fine. Four daughters were born to this union. They are: Mrs. Richard Burton (Elsie Rose) of New Market; Mrs. George Stanley (Lucille) of Bedford; Mrs. Hollis Naven (Edith) of Corning; and Mrs. Bill Pratt (Hope) of New Market. She is survived by the four daughters, four sons-in-law, four grandchildren and their spouses: Gordon Douglas and Janelle (McAlpin) Pratt of LeMars, Ia.; Patricia Ann (Stanley) and Douglas Schultz of Grand Mound, Ia.; Eleanor Jo (Burton) and Dan Hamilton, New Market; and Billie Joyce (Pratt) and Carl Hodge of Maryville, Mo. Great grandchildren are Sarah and Diane Schultz, Joey Hamilton and Aaron and Austin Pratt. Other survivors include one brother, Dewey Shields of New Market, seven sisters-in-law: Ella Fine, Cheyenne, Wyo; Rose (Fine) Retzer, Canon City, Colo.; Fannie Shields, Bedford; Emma and Helen Shields, Clarinda; Coryl Shields, New Market; and Rebecca Shields, Denver, Colo. She also leaves a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, June 11, 1966, and by her parents, seven brothers, four sisters and two great grandsons.
