Viva told that when she was a girl, her parents lived in a sod house. One day an Indian came in and wanted food. Viva's mother told the children (Viva and her siblings) to go into the bedroom. While Mrs. Hicks was feeding the Indian at the kitchen table, the Indian started "sassing" her, which the children no doubt heard from their place in the bedroom. While in the bedroom, young Viva located her father's revolver and tucked the gun in her dress where it could be seen and went out to the kitchen. Upon seeing the gun, the Indian promptly left the Hicks home. Viva moved with her parents to a farm near Hebron, Nebraska in 1902, where she lived for a few years before returning to the Kearney area to help her sister Laura, who had taken ill. Laura had been keeping house for a young farmer, Elmer Lindenstein, who rented a farm east of Kearney. Laura's husband, Clyde Glenn, helped Elmer with the farming and now Viva helped Laura with the housekeeping and cooking. Laura lost her eye sight in 1907, due to ulcers on her eyes. Since it was harvest time, Viva stayed on and helped with the house work. As life went on, Elmer and Viva fell in love and were married in Kearney on May 28, 1908. Viva's sister and brother-in-law found other work. Elmer and Viva became parents of four boys and two girls, Orville, Everett, Clifford, Viola, Lewis and Dorothy. The Lindensteins were a hard-working couple. They bought a 320 acre farm in 1918, east of Kearney and one mile north of the Buda School (Section 23 of Center Township in Buffalo County). Elmer grew wheat, corn and oats, and at one time farmed 500 acres, renting additional land beyond what he owned. They built a large house a year or two after purchasing their farm. The house sits about 3/4 mile north of Highway 30 on the west side of the road, approximately four miles east of Kearney. It is the first place north of the highway. The house had four bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. A dumb-waiter went back and forth from the kitchen to the basement, where much of the cooking was done. The basement contained a Delco generator for electricity, since power lines were not yet common in the country in the 1920s. In the winter time, the basement was a place for the kids to play games and enjoy Mom's fresh-baked cookies and cakes. Elmer's and Viva's boys built a baseball diamond in the pasture just south of the house, where the neighbor kids liked to come and play ball. The family also planted a big watermelon patch, where there were plenty of melons for all the neighbor kids. Daughter Viola told a touching story about her mother Viva in connection with the Kearney Air Base bomber that crashed just east of the base on the Lindenstein farm. The entire crew aboard the bomber were killed in the crash. After the crash site had been cleared by the base workers, Viva found a man's ring, burned and blackened, but with initials discernible so that identification could be made as to which soldier had been wearing it. After having the ring cleaned and polished by a local jeweler, Viva sent it to the soldier's widow. Viva was active in PTA work while her children were in school and she taught sewing at Buda School for a time. She enjoyed working in her flowers and garden and took pride in them. Her hobbies were needlework, rug making and candy making. Her grandchildren called her "Grandma Lindy". Elmer and Viva were later divorced. Viva then moved to California in 1945, where her grown up sons Clifford and Lewis had relocated. After living at Redwood City and Hawthorne, she moved to Inglewood, California. She later moved to Pomona, California, where she suffered a stroke on June 26, 1949. She returned to the Kearney area a few weeks later with her sons to regain her health. In January 1950 she returned to California where she suffered a series of three strokes on June 10, 1950. She was taken to Centinela Hospital in Inglewood where she remained in a coma most of the time until her death in Inglewood at 8:30 a.m. on July 25, 1950. She was returned for burial in Riverside Cemetery at Gibbon, Nebraska. Elmer left the farm in the late 1940s and died in Kearney on March 19, 1958. He resided in an apartment of a house at 2306 1st Avenue in Kearney at the time of his death. He was buried in the Kearney Cemetery.
