Orville attended the Buda School along Highway 30 through the 10th grade. It was only a short distance south of his farm home. On February 6, 1929, Orville married Maude Elizabeth Russell in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was born in Kearney, Nebraska on December 28, 1909, one of seven children born to Fred H. Russell and Elleanor May (Frasier) Russell. Two sons and two daughters (Dale, Suzanne, Gary and Glenda) were born to Orville and Maude, who farmed east of Kearney and later two and a half miles north of Gibbon, Nebraska. Dale started his education at Center School (District 28) east of Kearney. Then all four children attended District 5 School after the family moved north of Gibbon. The District 5 School was located one mile west and one mile south of the Lindenstein farm. Orville and Maude survived some tough times during the 1930s depression years. Not only had the United States economy gone sour, but the plains states were saddled with a severe drought, dust storms and the heat wave of 1936. During the dust bowl years, Orville told of having to run rope from their farm house to the barn so he could find his way through the dust clouds. At meal time, they had to drape wet towels over their heads and plates while eating, to keep the dust out of their food. Upon waking up in the mornings, their pillows would be covered in dust, except where their heads had been. When the two oldest children were young, Orville's crops were doing poorly, so he took a job with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) building railroads through the mountains in Colorado. The WPA had been created in May 1935 by presidential order and was a "make work" program that provided jobs to the unemployed during the Great Depression. Most of the jobs were in the construction of public facilities such as highways, streets, airports, utilities, dams, parks, recreational fields, etc. The average WPA worker earned a salary of $41.57 per month. For many years, Orville farmed and raised a lot of cattle in a partnership with Jud Henline. The farm was located north of Gibbon in the southeast corner of Section 35, Valley Township of Buffalo County. Jud owned all the land, while Orville furnished all the equipment and labor. At one time there were 1,200 head of cattle to feed. Youngest daughter Glenda told how Orville was a fun-loving father, who enjoyed having a good time with the kids. She remembered him often starting water fights with Sue and Gary and he even threw glasses full of water at them in the house. In 1954, Orville and Maude took a trip to Florida to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with another couple. They left Gary and Glenda with their oldest son Dale, and his family, during their two-week trip. Orville and Maude left farm life behind in about 1970 and moved to York, Nebraska, where Orville worked as a feed salesman and Maude was employed briefly in the cafeteria at York College. They resided in a trailer court in the south part of York, near Beaver Creek. They later divorced, and Orville died at his home in York of apparent heart failure on April 5, 1973. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery at Gibbon, Nebraska.
